Carrie Zhao, MD

Board-certified Ophthalmologist

My name is (Carrie) Yue Zhao, and I would like to introduce myself as a new Ophthalmology provider specializing in
Glaucoma. I grew up in Fremont, CA and am excited to return to serve the East Bay community. After completing my bachelor's degree at UCLA, I left California for medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. There, I was reminded how exciting it was to receive a new pair of glasses while volunteering at the Cleveland Free Clinic's eye clinic. I decided to become an Ophthalmologist and completed my residency at the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute. I learned about the physiology and pathology of the eye, but more importantly, I was inspired by the patient-provider relationship developed while managing chronic disease. This was especially apparent in glaucoma, where disease onset is insidious, disease course is unpredictable, and treatment sometimes difficult. I wanted to contribute to the care of glaucoma and pursued a glaucoma fellowship with Dr. Robert Weinreb at UCSD Shiley Eye. Many of the underserved populations had limited access to care and consequently developed severe glaucoma at a young age. I found their care to be the most rewarding and impactful.

After fellowship, I returned to the Bay Area and joined the Department of Veterans Affairs in August 2021, where I
have had the honor of providing care to our veterans. However, I miss working with the greater East Bay community,
and as a result will be joining Dr Leonardo Dacanay at Bellevue Eye Medical Center on a part-time basis in 2024. I speak fluent Mandarin Chinese in addition to English, and our staff speak Spanish. I am accepting comprehensive Ophthalmology and Glaucoma patients and would be honored to take care of you. I pledge to
provide the highest quality and ethical care.
